Now Playing Tracks

Every year MECCA, a nonprofit organization in Eugene, hosts their Object Afterlife Artist Challenge. Artists sign up and are given a material that would normally be considered trash and have two months to create art with it. Last year I was given broken Barbie doll parts. This year my material was an ugly, broken window shutter.

I repainted the shutter and saved up my chicken’s eggshells for a a month to create a mosaic edging. I removed some slats and stuffed the blank space with succulents. My back fence was replaced this summer so I used a plank for a shelf where I repotted some chicks and hens into teacups. Added some air plants and a wire in the back to hang it.

I’m very thrilled with it. As a fiber artist, I look forward to being truly challenged (by the material and by my process) with this event. If you’re local, stop by and see what other artists have done with their “trash.” Object Afterlife Artist Challenge opens August 23rd through September. Artist reception, award show and First Friday Artwalk on September 5th.
